A LED is a compound semiconductor device that converts electricity to light by the passage of electric charges through a duly treated silicon junction.  A LED is therefore a diode that at a voltage of about 3.5V starts emitting light.  LUXEON LED is a revolutionary, energy efficient and ultra compact new light source, combining the lifetime and reliability advantages of Light Emitting Diodes with the brightness of conventional lighting. 

The life duration of power LED's depends on two important things: the working temperature and driving current. The ARC LED line uses mainly aluminium for its excellent heat exchange coefficient which guarantees an optimal cooling.  Power LED's work at low voltage, they are powered by reasonable low currents, 350mA for 1W LED's and 700mA for 3W LED's.

When talking about light, the power indicated in W is wrongly identified as a reference of the quantity of light emitted.  Actually the quantity of light emitted is given by the parameter lumen and the concentration of light on a certain surface is given by the parameter lux.  The electric power watt indicates the energy consumed or absorbed and not the light emitted.  The luminous efficiency indicated in lumen per W is given by the relation between the power absorbed and the light emitted.  The examples indicated show clearly that with about a third of the energy it is possible to obtain higher luminous fluxes.

One of the advantages of power LED's is their life duration.  They are semi conductors and therefore they have an almost endless life estimable in 100,000 working hours.  Heat has the property of speeding up the aging process.  Life duration of a LED is the process of reduction of the luminous lux, the life duration of a LED module is of about 50,0000 hours at the maximum allowed working temperature.  When working in more favorable circumstances than the maximum allowed the life duration will be higher.  When working above the maximum allowed limits the luminous flux will decline rapidly.

All Luminous values are given in LUX at 1 meter distance. The 1 meter distance coincides with the luminous value expressed in candela (cd), Therefore the two values can be read in LUX as well as in Candela. For the calculations of LUX values at different distance at whom the luminosity shall be calculated and Lux @ 1M is the luminosity value given.

  • Example: a AR111 has a luminosity of 1000 Lux at 1 meter. The luminous value of the AR111 at 2 meters and 3 meters are: 2M 1000/ (2*2) = 250 Lux,  3M 1000/ (3*3) = 111 Lux.

For the Calculation of the diameter of the luminous beam reflected at different distances from 1 meter it is necessary to multiply the diameter indicated at 1 meter for the new distance value needed.

  • Example Beam diameter at 1 meter = 0.5m, therefore Beam diameter at 2 meter = 1 meter (0.5 x 2), Likewise Beam diameter at 3 meter = 1.5 meter (0.5 x 3).
